The 2013 Mount Hood Eruption was an Explosive VEI 5 eruption that happened on December 9th, 2013.
Prologue[]
During Lunchtime on November 5th, 2012, A somewhat benign Quake of 2.2 followed by aftershocks of 1.7 to 2.1 occurred at about 3.5 miles beneath Mount Hood. At first it was believed to have been normal but it was shortly aftet noticed that they happened close together, almost like a harmonic tremor, Almost.
But during the evening hours of November 27th, A magnitude 4.7 happened at a much more shallow depth, of about 2.3 miles beneath the mountain. Based upon this, for the time being, a code orange/Yellow alert was issued by USGS. And people enjoying Activities near or on the volcano were told to stay away from the volcano until green alert came back.
Early On December 2nd, With quakes still happening but at a depth of as shallow as
3 miles and at a maximum magnitude of 2.3, the Orange/Yellow alert was downgraded to a Plain Yellow Alert, Some people were allow NEAR the volcano but weren't allowed on it.
However, swelling was noticed on the Southwestern side of the Volcano.
It was clear magma was on its way up, indicating a future eruption.
On December 31st, About half an hour before mid-night, Increased sulphur emissions and a quake of 3.0 caused trees on and slightly near the Volcano to become uprooted and a local lake to have a drop in pH levels.
This also cause several deaths, mainly wildlife.
Minor Eruption[]
On January 21st, 2013, at around 10:45 AM, a magnitude 4.6 quake triggered a minor explosive eruption, Enough to be registered as a strong VEI 2. The Resulting eruption only lasted till 11:03 AM but sent an ash cloud a good 8 miles out. 3 people died as a result of the sudden eruption.
Continuing Events[]
from February to mid april only minor quakes, up to 3.0, had been occurring. But swelling continued, and even speed up.
